The vintage Rolex GMT Master is one of the hottest watches in the collector market. Everyone knows the iconic red/blue Pepsi bezel insert.
Rolex originally introduced the GMT Master when Pan Am airlines tarted flying trans-Atlantic routes with jet aircraft. The idea was that with the rotating 24 hour bezel and separate 24 hr hand, pilots could keep track of their native time and try to avoid jet-lag.
The first Rolex GMT Master was the mid 1950’s reference 6542. The reference 1675 followed and boasted a new movement, caliber 1575. This reference 16750 boasts a high beat, quickset date feature with the caliber 3085. The reason this is referred to as a transitional model is that this GMT Master features a plastic acrylic crystal while having the conveniences of the newer quickset date movement.
The first series of Rolex ref 16750 watches came with matte dials, this later model, just before the more modern Rolex reference 16700 GMT Master watches were unveiled, features a glossy dial with white gold surrounds framing the tritium hour markers.
This watch was bought from the original owner when he brought it in for a service. My watchmaker has performed a factory authorized level service, without polishing the case. The watch functions flawlessly.
The dial is perfect with slightly aged luminous tone. The dial and hand luminous material match perfectly.
The watch is supplied on its original Rolex Oyster bracelet, reference 93150, with a flip-lock Oyster clasp. This is the same bracelet used on Rolex Submariner dive watches of the same vintage.
Rolex watches fitted with the caliber 3035 and its variants were only produced for a short time before being changed to the newer 3135 caliber.
The stainless steel Oyster case on this watch, measures 40mm wide and is fitted with the original Rolex Oyster twinlock crown. The case was originally water-resistant to 100 meters instead of the 330 metres found on Submariners. This makes the vintage Rolex GMT Master much easier to wear under cuffed shirts and with formal wear.
The photos of this watch speak for themselves. The watch is in excellent physical and mechanical condition.
